overheard at the office

Polka is exactly like hip-hop, only Polish.

1. It’s feared and maligned by people who aren’t part of the same disenfranchised culture.
2. It’s been absorbed and tweaked by other cultures with similar disenfranchisement.
3. It’s been co-opted and watered down by the corporations to sell products and control the youth population.

Polka is exactly like hip-hop, only Polish.

Also overheard: Grand Royal Records is for sale.

That is all for today.

country dancing is exactly like the nightclub scenes in the original "Battlestar Gallactica" series. It's basically a group of soul-less humans dancing like soul-less humanoid robots. not that there's anything wrong with that. I think that country dancing is pretty representative of the dominant politics of the southern US - some nameless, faceless ideologue dictates a few acceptable maneuvers and then the faithful servants goose-step line dance those steps in blissful, mindless lockstep. Nothing like polka.

what about country? lots of white people think they can dance to country. white people should probably avoid dancing in general. someone always gets hurt.

Though - Polka is the only music white people can dance to...

References to polka always remind me of the time my sister and I were dancing the polka in our living room and inadvertently slid on my history book, tearing most of the pages away from the binding as we fell. So another way polka is like hip-hop is that it shouldn't be danced to in confined spaces.

polka is exactly like hip-hop. Accordingly, Al Yankovic, Sr. is the Grand Master Flash of polka while 'Weird' Al Yankovic is "The Fat Boys" of polka.
