It’s hard to study for a mid-term that doesn’t count for a grade but is only intended to give you an estimation of how little you actually know. It’s really, really hard, especially when sitting in a wifi enabled library with windows looking out to clear blue skies on a toasty September day.
addendum, post-test: the mid-term went about as planned. but here's the kicker: the prof asked us not to put our names on the test booklets. rather, we were to pick a number between 1 and 1000 and write it on the front cover. smart asses galore probably picked 007, 666, 69, 427, so on and so forth, but i chose a much cooler number: 42. who else in law school would pick a number from a geeky sci-fi-meets-philosophy book? as I turned my test in to the teacher, i noticed the test booklet on top of the stack HAD THE SAME NUMBER. i'm not not nearly as cool as i thought i was.

ah, johnny, not a problem. you've come to the right place. sci-fi geeks abound on particleman.org. 42 comes from a famous sci-fi book called The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It's quite short and quite funny. And it just might change your life. don't quote me on that, though (do i sound like a lawyer yet?). either way, you must absolutely read this book. i'll dig up my copy - it's somewhere in my parents' house. if i told you exactly what the 42 means in the book, i'd kind of ruin the whole story, so i am forced to leave you in suspense. rest assured your patience will by duly rewarded. i'm not sure what 427 means, but to find out what 47 is all about, click the link below.

forgive me, I am a movie geek that, at one time, was a sci fi geek, but now, I'm simply, a man, who doesn't, understand, how to use a comma, or what the meaning behind the numbers 42 or 427. My only number is 3 because, well I'm the third....but as to the other numbers, can anyone help?

While I am familiar with 42, 38 is my random number of choice and the key to deciphering all of my passwords, accessing my Swiss bank accounts, and finding my hidden house key.

47... you stumped me. my geekiness is need of tuning. please forgive me and teach me the ways of true geek-dom.

47 also has geek cachet, and I find it's not nearly so popular.

Aaron hath spoken. And it makes sense. what i left out of the post was that i tracked down the other 42 guy in the hallway since he turned his test in right before i did. we both agreed that while we figured we were pretty cool for choosing 42, there were probably a lot of other equally cool 42 people that we didn't know about yet. when the tests come back, we'll see exactly how many of these people there are...

It's not that you're not as cool as you once thought, it's that more people are cooler than you think.
