the world is a vampire

That Smashing Pumpkins song Bullet With Butterfly Wings came on the radio today and it sounded completely out of place. The ‘alternative’ station these days plays some weird shit. Ever since Clear Channel shut down Houston’s hard rock/classic rock/metal station, the alternative station has tried to pick up the slack. I’ve heard them play various Metallica songs like One, Wherever I May Roam, Enter Sandman, etc. Also, metal-country has been all the rage the last few years (Creed, Nickelback, and their progeny/imitators). Mix in the requisite poppy-punk stuff (Blink*, or these days, only its progeny) and you’ve got one whack radio station. But there are gems.

They took an interest in old Nirvana for a while. In Bloom and Lithium were getting near-weekly rotation and they played Dumb just last night. Pepper, the only single the Butthole Surfers ever had that made mainstream radio, still gets airplay every now and then.

Um, I think that’s it for the gems. They don’t really experiment with any of the new bands I listen to. But another station – the college station, no less – plays some interesting stuff. They played a Mirah song last week and I got all excited. I think it was one of the songs I chose to post. Being a former college-station DJ myself, I couldn’t help but be proud. You go broke-ass college station! Your university probably doesn’t give you enough funding, but you’re playing good music anyway.

*not that i dislike blink or anything...

YOU think Clear Channel is bad? Try having worked for the vil bastards or the just as terrible precursor AM/FM. ahhhh Those were the days!!! p-idiot: I like to add stations to my "PRESETS" as well, but I enjoy getting presents much more, speaking of which go by me something. As for the College DJ life it is all about playing random shit you would never hear anywhere else that is why it is college radio. Crap my show consisted of punk//emo circa mid late 90's, and old school rap. And then in between the two I would segue with literally the worst possible song I could find in the studio/the most silly stuff, this would often consist of Vanilla Ice's attempts at rap/metal, or my vinyl copy of Sesame Street Fever KIR- MSHA

yup, i was there for a year and a half. it was mostly before the time i knew you, so that's probably why. remember gabe, the guy that played in my band? we hosted the show together. sam - i had no idea that station existed. i'm adding it to my presents today.

dood, you dj'd at kvrx? how did i miss that? i work with several guys who had radio shows there.

97.5 is the attempted reincarnation of KLOL. They have some of the same personalities (Wendy Miller, Walton & Johnson, Terry Michaels (the morning traffic guy)) and they use the same slogan (Houston’s Rock Station). They play hard rock like KLOL, but a significant amount of classic rock. They’re really banking on CC hatred; whenever they do a station identification, they always mention that they are a “Cumulus Media Station.” Once CC buys them out too, I’m really screwed.

what's 97.5? not sure i've even heard of it. apparently, i'm more out of the loop than you are. amen, CC is run by ruthless bastards.

there are so many reasons to boycott clear channel. first & foremost, the mays brothers are evil - and i have firsthand knowledge of this from my experience working for the tx association of broadcasters.

I boycotted Clear Channel after the KLOL incident. The only rock station I'm allowed to which I am allowed to listen is 97.5. It plays a fair amount of Ozzy and Metallixa, but I have to suffer through Pink Floyd and Tom Petty.
