If you go to the website, I think it tells you the history of the restaurant, and how it got it's name.

i don't know if i'd want to eat at a place that translates into "better than nothing." kinda low standards, huh? and actually, i think i saw that place on my way to taos, nm almost 10 years ago! i laughed at the name then.

Back in San Angelo (motto: Texas' Garden of Eden, incidentally, only 44 miles west of Eden, TX), we would eat at either Mejor Que Nada, which was really good Tex-Mex, or Enrique's, which was much closer to authentic Mexican, according to those who know.

While I lived in Chi-town, I rarely ate Mexican food (only when my midwestern friends really insisted on it OR if it involved heavy margarita drinking). But really, what we eat here in Texas is really Tex-Mex (not Mexican) food. Not to get nitpicky or anything... Austin and Chicago pics are in your possession - do with them as you please.

the waitstaff probably eats there b/c they get the food for free. when food is free, you tend to be less picky. and how do you know that those particular chinese/italian/mexican/whatever people just don't have bad taste in food? just because you see white people in the luby's doesn't mean the food is suddenly stellar. just sayin'.

Everyone needs a rule of some sort, if there were no rules, there'd be anarchy, and the next thing you know White Tiger would be popular again. We don't want that. If the waitstaff eats there with some amount of regularity (once a month or more), then it would be ok.

yeah, my rule for the weekend was no mexican food allowed. i can get plenty of that down here in h-town. steve, i like your rule, but it has some issues. what if only the waitstaff are of the ethnicity in question? is that good enough? if so, how does that have any bearing on the food?

One of my rules of thumb is that I will never eat at an ethnic restaurant where there are no members of that ethnicity eating or working. If I go to a chinese restaurant and all the employees are italians, and there are no chinese patrons, then it might not be the best chinese restaurant. I did have to break this rule while I was in Korea, though. There were very few Italians to work at the italian restaurant, and not many chinese to work at the chinese restaurant (aptly named "Chinese Restaurant").

hey, i saw a chicago-style pizza parlour here in mcallen. somehow i don't think it's the same. just like a mexican food restaurant in someplace like iowa isn't quite right.

Chicago. Home of the best pizza on the planet, good kielbasa, but not as good as Hamtramck's Kielbasas. Other than that, I don't much care for the city. Rather be in Detroit.
