Normally, I can understand Stephen Colbert’s sense of humor - drier than Jon Stewart’s and a shade away from the completely nonsensical. But did you see Colbert’s speech at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner? I don’t know why these people let Colbert speak at their event. He absolutely killed. Or totally sucked. (Depending on your political leanings, of course). It’s obvious to me that he was freaking hilarious for 90% of the time and completely inscrutable for the rest. I couldn’t get some of his jokes. They were too dry for me to process, or I’m just too dim-witted to figure them out.
He clearly and blatantly mocked W with a straight face, to his face, in front of 2,700 people, including his wife. It was a show of phenomenal gumption and insanity. Kudos to Colbert for taking the plunge.
So you haven’t seen the speech yet? You can watch it here.

skorloff - in order to remind the president of this fact, we have to assume he currently is aware of it. i don't know if this is a safe assumption. carrico - i vent, you vent, we all vent. this is a place to vent, and be vented. or something.

i agree with you both, i just needed to vent. i feel much better now. i make it a point to listen to conservative talking heads in equal doses to liberal talking heads, and i actually can't tell which ones i like less. i like stewart and colbert for the exact reason you mentioned - they don't take themselves too seriously, which is an attribute i strive for. signing off from kumbaya-lala-land.org

apparently, particleman.org is the place for wonton idealism. thanks carrico, but i think you confused this place with kumbaya-lala-land-idealist.org colbert is getting notice (however meager) by saying to the press what the press has been to afraid to say, and at the same time reminding the president, to the president, that he's a dishonest, phony-ass prick.

in a perfect world, yes, the proper forum would have been the public stage. but the reality is - our political world is a joke. W is a joke. the presidency is a joke. the administration is a joke. the policies and their application are a joke. i think anyone who is critical about the current state of affairs will agree with that. regardless, that doesn't mean that one man, acting alone (or in unison with other like-minded types) can't make a joke of the bad joke we're in. he's making light of reality in his own twisted way. i agree that he is a little known TV host who spoke in a little known gala - but hey, we're sitting here yapping about it on a blog, right? and it made the news, right? score 1 for Colbert, score -1 for W, who walked out with egg on his face. each side - democrat and republican - will always have its army of talking heads. the democrats have franken, stewart, colbert, and others i don't know about. their republican equivalents do the same thing the democratic ones do, except they don't make it funny, and they take themselves way too seriously. for that, i hope the Colberts of this country will continue to crack strange jokes, perhaps bad, that make their targets uncomfortable.

I'm a big fan of Colbert & his show, but I found his speech totally inappropriate and unfunny. Let me explain. The fact that this president has caused the deaths of thousands of people based on pretenses he knew were false at the time, the fact that he has turned a blind eye to science and allowed companies to repeatedly rape our environment, the fact that he has stomped all over political liberties to promote his right wing agenda, and the fact that he has spent his entire term avoiding answering up for it is not funny its depressing. And the issues shouldn't have to be brought forward by a satirical cable tv host, in a little reported gala event. The appropriate venue would have been the public forum for the past 5 years. That said I thought what Colbert did was incredibly ballsy and seriously kicked ass.
