tactics in negotiation

p 20:

"Appear irrational where it seems helpful. This is a successful but often dangerous tactic... Primier Nikita Kruschev significantly increased deterrent power of the relatively small Soviet nuclear force by banging his shoe on the table at the United Nations in 1960; he gave the impression of being somewhat imbalanced – a man who might unleash nuclear weapons upon even a slight provocation." Dispute Resolution: Negotiation, Mediation, and Other Processes, Goldberg, et al., 2003.

I’m totally using that one. The bang-shoe-on-table routine. Love it.

THE KRUSCHEV KONTEST

Anyone who can find me cold hard proof that this actually took place gets a Particleman t-shirt. By cold hard proof, i mean a picture, archives from a reputable newspaper, a written statement from someone who was there, etc etc. Legalese: This reward offer expires on June 11, 2006. If i'm not satisfied with the coldness and hardness of the proof, i don't have to buy you a tshirt, but maybe a Particleman sticker or mug or something. I won't leave you empty handed if you present something substantial.

yeah, as it turns out, i had found that picture and that link too. but nothing definitive. i even emailed the author of the textbook asking if there was any proof. he didn't seem too happy to have me question the accuracy of his textbook... hey, i'm a skeptic, what can i say.

yeah, that's the only picture i could find, too. thanks for the extra distraction from studying, p-man. my google search also turned up random references to people saying they could remember the video footage of him banging his shoe on the news back in the day, so i think it really happened and somewhere in some news archive the video footage exists. however, i did not find it on the 'net, so there will be no p-man t-shirt for me. but hey, nice attempt to call attention to the merch and boost sales, p.

there seems to be some debate about whether this ever actually happened, but the picture available on the internet seems to be the one <a HREF="http://query.nytimes.com/gst/nytstore.html?kw=khrushchev&submit.x=22&submit.y=7" rel="nofollow">here</A> <a HREF="http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=148670" rel="nofollow">Discussion</A> of the shoe incident:

I would be careful about where exactly I would use it. At a dinner party where you're on the soup course of dinner, it mightn't be the best idea.
