The coolest thing happened today. I plugged my ipod in, loaded iTunes, and iTunes said:

So I said: "Huh. That's funny." I unplugged the iPod and performed a 'reset.' Then just to be on the safe side, I made sure all my music was still there. Lo an behold - it was all gone! Every last song! No where to be found! After spending weeks - no, months - honing the perfect playlist so that it had just the songs I wanted and none of the ones I didn't, it all went bye-bye. Now I get to compile the list for a second time.
*grumble*. apple, i shake my fists at you.

Are you using something other than iTunes to manage the songs on it? Because with iTunes, it would just reload them.

yup, i use itunes to manage the songs. that is, i drag folders of music to the library and then drag songs from the folder to the ipod.
but now, i'm having a second problem. itunes made me restore the ipod to the factory settings, and i can't individually add songs to the ipod - i can only do a full sync with the entire library. also, once the ipod is synced, all of the tracks are greyed out and i can not delete individual tracks.

You've had the worst luck with your ipods. I think Apple knows who you are and where you come from!

I'd recommend setting up an "ipod playlist" in iTunes and syncing just that playlist.
A: you don't lose your selections if you reset.
B: you can edit it without having your iPod to hand.

well, i already freaked out and restored the factory settings, and in the process installed iTunes 7, which was a huge mistake. i then removed 7 and went back 6, so my playlist is gone. bravo, particleman. job well done.

just click on your ipod on the navigation bar on the left side, then click on the song you want to delete, then press delete (on the keyboard).
